Hey folks, we are back with a new release of EasyEngine. This is a minor maintenance release, which addresses a few bug fixes and has a feature enhancement as well!

Feature Enhancements πŸ› οΈ

Server Wide Environment Type Support

This env support was inspired by wp_get_environment_type and supports the same possible values.

This feature was initially released in v4.5.3, but it had very limited functionality. From this release onwards it is taking more actions based on the set env.

If a value is set up for a server-wide environment, then it will:

  1. Setup the WP Config variable WP_ENVIRONMENT_TYPE on site creation with the set value in ee config.
  2. If the environment is set to ‘local’, ‘development’, or ‘staging’, then on site create and clone, mailhog will be enabled by default.

To register the server-wide environment, you need to run the following command:

ee config set env <environment>

Where possible values for <environment> are β€˜local’, β€˜development’, β€˜staging’, and β€˜production’. If not set, it defaults to β€˜production’.

Bugfixes πŸ›πŸš«

We have fixed a few issues in the codebase that were not reported in the PHP Compatibility test for running EasyEngine CLI in PHP 8.0 environment.

EasyEngine v4.5.0 released

We’re back again with another release of EasyEngine, but this one is very special. In this release, we are shipping one of the most requested features for EasyEngine – the ability to clone sites from one EasyEngine server to another!

Clone Site

Now you can clone a site from one EasyEngine server to another given you have SSH access to both the servers. This way you can clone sites from production -> staging and staging -> local using just one command. We’re expecting that it will make your development workflow a lot better.

For now, this feature will work only on WordPress sites. Support for PHP and HTML sites will be added in future releases.

Here’s how it looks:

# Clone site on same host
$ ee site clone foo.com bar.com

# Clone site from remote server
$ ee site clone root@foo.com:foo.com bar.com

# Clone site from remote with same name
$ ee site clone root@foo.com:foo.com .

# Clone site to remote
$ ee site clone foo.com root@foo.com:bar.com

# Clone site from remote. Only clone files and db, not uploads
$ ee site clone root@foo.com:foo.com bar.com --files --db

Clone command creates a new site every time it is run.

The newly created site will have the same site create parameters as passed to the source site. If you’re having trouble getting SSL on the new site, you may specify the --ssl flag to either remove SSL or have a different type i.e. self-signed certificate.

# Clone site from remote and enable ssl
$ ee site clone root@foo.com:foo.com bar.com --ssl=<off|le|custom|self> [--wildcard] [--ssl-crt=<path>] [--ssl-key=<path>]

Sync Site

Sync command will sync code, files, and database to an existing site. The key difference between clone and sync commands is that the clone command will always create a new site and then copy data from source to destination, while the sync command will just copy data from source to destination.

# Sync site on same host
$ ee site sync foo.com bar.com

# Sync site from remote server
$ ee site sync root@foo.com:foo.com bar.com

# Sync site from remote with same name
$ ee site sync root@foo.com:foo.com .

# Sync site to remote
$ ee site sync foo.com root@foo.com:bar.com

# Sync site from remote. Only clone files and db, not uploads
$ ee site sync root@foo.com:foo.com bar.com --files --db

Bugfixes πŸ›

  • Increase self-signed cert validity
  • Add one time notice for MacOS for updating Docker daemon.json
  • Fix fresh install errors
  • Fix bug on moving SSL to another site

EasyEngine v4.4.0 released

Heya! We’re excited to announce another major release yet again! I’m so hyped while typing this blog post because not only is this a major release, but it also ships some of the most requested features of EasyEngine v4!

This release was going to be published much sooner, but some changes like “Remove 27 Site Limit” required much work and testing. We put extra efforts to in testing it to ensure it doesn’t break existing sites, since it had some major changes.

Features Added ✨

Remove SSL from a Site

This has been the most requested feature of EasyEngine. Until now, EasyEngine had support for adding SSL to an existing site. However, it never had an option to remove SSL. This was so because we didn’t see many use-cases for removing SSL on a site, and we thought not giving the option to remove SSL would also promote secure sites. However, we realised there were legit use-cases for this. i.e. If you have a custom certificate that has expired and getting a renewed cert will take some time, you may want to disable SSL on the site instead of having users report an “insecure website” warning to you.

Here’s how you you remove SSL from a site:

ee site update example.com --ssl=off

Remove 27 Site Limit

We heard many complaints from people with big servers that EasyEngine could only create 27 sites on a server. We were aware of this limitation, but this challenge was hard to solve as the root cause was how docker handles networks internally. It took a while to get it right, but now we have a fix for it, and you can create (almost) unlimited sites on a server!

P.S. Technically speaking, the limit of creating sites has now increased to ~65,024, which is high enough that you may not hit it on a single server.

We would like to thank our new contributors for sending their first PRs – JayShamnani, danish17, PiyushKhurana, RussQuan.

EasyEngine v4.3.0 Released

Hey, we have just released v4.3.0 of EasyEngine πŸ₯³! This is a second major feature release just 15 days after v4.2.0 was released 🀯. Looks like someone is on a roll πŸ˜‰.

This time we have features like:

So let’s get started 🏎️.

Features Added ✨️

PHP 8 Site Support

We have added support for PHP 8 in sites. So now you can create new sites on PHP 8, as well as update existing sites to PHP 8. We haven’t made PHP 8 default for new sites as it may break some plugins. However, it may happen in the future.

# Create new site with PHP 8.0
ee site create example.com --type=wp --php=8.0

# Updates existing site to PHP 8.0
ee site update example.com --php=8.0

PHP 8 On-Host Support

We have also added support for PHP 8 on host. Earlier EasyEngine wasn’t able to run if PHP 8 was installed on the machine where EasyEngine running, as it’s code was not compatible with it. We have now made it’s code compatible with it so now if you have PHP 8 oh host, EasyEngine will not complain and work seamlessly.

Add WP-VIP Extensions in PHP

We have installed all the extensions present in WordPress VIP Go image. So now you can rest assured that any of your VIP Go sites will run just fine on EasyEngine too. This will be really helpful for people who’re developing on any VIP Go site locally, or those who’re planning to migrate to their sites to VIP Go.

Support for ZSH Completions

We have added proper support for ZSH completions, so now typing ee <tab> will show you the following output:

ZSH completions for EasyEngine
ZSH completions for EasyEngine

To configure ZSH competions, follow our handbook on this topic.

Bugfixes πŸ›

Rename ‘site ssl’ Command

While developing EasyEngine in early stages, we needed a command to verify CNAME records for wildcard SSL certificates. As we were in hurry and couldn’t get a better name, we called it site ssl.

The command site ssl wasn’t very intutive and it didn’t specify what it was doing. So to make the command more descriptive, we have renamed it to site ssl-verify.

We have still kept the old command for backward compatibility reasons, so if any of your script use it, don’t fret πŸ™‚.

Here is an example of previous and new command:

# Old Command ⛔️
ee site ssl example.com

# New Command βœ…οΈ
ee site ssl-verify example.com

Remove Site Host Entry on Delete

There was a bug where entries of the site from /etc/hosts were not getting deleting after deleting the site. This has been fixed in this release.

Stack Updates πŸ”„

New Contributors πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»

In this release, we saw contribution from @dishitpala, which was his first ever contribution to EasyEngine πŸ₯³.

Dishit submitted the patch for rename ‘site ssl’ command, which brought a usability change to EasyEngine’s SSL verification process.

Thank you so much Dishit for your contribution (and I hope you won’t mind the small time we took to merge your PR πŸ™ˆ).

EasyEngine v4.2.0 Release Highlight

Hello there! We’re happy to announce a new release for EasyEngine – v4.2.0. It has been quite a while since we have had a major feature release of EasyEngine. As long a wait it has been, we’re sure that the work that has been put into this release will make you think it was worth the wait.

This version has introduced support for custom docker-compose, added refresh command to regenerate docker-compose file and also brought some optimisations to the MariaDB image.

Features Added πŸ› οΈ

Support for Custom Docker Compose πŸ‘©β€πŸ”§

We have added support for custom docker-compose file in this release. Now with this feature, you can modify the docker-compose stack of a site without changing the default docker-compose.yml file. So now you don’t need to worry that your changes to the stack will be overridden in a future update.

This opens up a host of new customisation opportunities i.e. Now you can change the PHP docker image that your site runs on, or even you can extend the EasyEngine docker images, add your customisations like some additional PHP extensions, and then use those images. You can even define a new totally new service in docker-compose i.e. a node service, and that will run alongside existing services.

To see how you can make use of this feature, check out our handbook page on this topic.

P.S. This feature is also applicable on global services – the services that require only one instance to be running i.e. database, cache etc… So you will be able to modify the service stack to do things like having an ElasticSearch, RabbitMQ or Kafka for all your sites 🀯

Refresh Command to Regenerate Configuration Files πŸ”„

# Regenerate docker-compose of a site
ee site refresh <site-name>

# Regenerate docker-compose of global services
ee service refresh

This feature will regenerate your docker-compose file, letting you revert to the stock docker-compose file. This will be helpful especially for sites where you’ve changed the docker-compose file, but now you need the original file considering you can now move your customisations to a custom docker-compose file.

MariaDB Optimizations 🏎️

We have re-tested our MariaDB instance for performance bottlenecks, and accordingly, we have updated our docker image to include all our optimizations in it.

Expect a little performance boost for all your sites, for free πŸ˜‰.

Bugfixes πŸ›πŸš«

SSL Renew Cron

This was a major request from the community to fix this bug, and finally, we’ve fixed it – We have added a cron to trigger SSL renewal every 24 hours. So now you don’t have to worry about sites with expired certificates πŸ™‚.

Disable Logging for JS/CSS in Nginx

We have disabled the logging of JS/CSS files in Nginx. Most of the time it’s not required and they keep on filling the access logs and disk space, not to mention it also makes making debugging issues harder.

Update ee-admin tools path

We have made changes in the way the admin tools URL was handled by EE behind the scenes so that it works correctly even when you have a non-default public directory. This will be especially helpful for sites that have CI/CD enabled in them.

Fix Opcache bug in PHP 7.4

There was a bug in upstream PHP 7.4 code that was causing some issues with Opcache. We have updated the PHP image to the latest version to solve this issue.

Add confirmation in message before running EE update

Now before EE will start an update, it will warn you that the update will take some time, and also suggest you run the upgrade in a tmux so that the upgrade goes smoothly even if your SSH connection to the server breaks.

SSL Renew

ee site ssl-renew was broken in EasyEngine v4.1.2 because of some changes in that release. This bug has been fixed in this release.

Note: If you haven’t set up SSL renewal cron, you can find how to do so here.

Other Changes

SSL renew will renew certificates before 30 days from expiration

Earlier, ee site ssl-renew used to allow certificate renewals 25 days before the certificate was going to be expired. Now we’ve changed the limit to 30 days as per the guidelines from letsencrypt.

Feature added:Add Alias Domain Support in HTML, PHP and WP Site Types
Alias domains now work on all site types πŸŽ‰

Hello folks πŸ‘‹, this time around, we have two new releases.

Feature Enhancements πŸ› οΈ

Add Alias Domain Support in HTML, PHP and WP Site Types

In v4.1.0, alias domain feature was released, but it was restricted to just WordPress subdom sites. Now that feature has been extended to all the site types including HTML, PHP, and WP(non-mu and subdir) sites as well.

Optimizations πŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈοΈπŸ”§οΈ

Sysctl parameters – In all our containers, we’ve tweaked Sysctl parameters. This should improve performance in high load scenarios.
Nginx Optimizations – We have updated worker_connections in our nginx-proxy. This will allow nginx to have more connections per worker and hence improve performance in high load scenarios.

UpdatesπŸ”„οΈ

Following components of our stack have been updated:

Nginx proxy1.14.1 -> 1.17.6
Nginx (Openresty)1.15.8.3 -> 1.17.8.2
Redis5.0 -> 6.0.6

Bugfixes πŸ›πŸš«

Clear Proxy Cache on Post Delete

There was a bug in nginx proxy cache (added in v4.1.0) which was not updating cache when posts were deleted. As a result, even after the post was deleted, nginx proxy used to serve its contents from the cache.

Other Minor Bugfixes:

  • Add health-check block for AWS ELB – Add support for AWS ELB health-check in nginx-proxy.
  • PHP update to latest version – Fix update PHP to the latest version not working using ee site update command.
  • Site clean with proxy cache – Fix cache clearing of obj+page when only proxy flag is passed.
  • DB name with a hyphen – Fix site not getting created when a custom database name is being used which has a hyphen.
  • Delete auth whitelist – Fix deleting an auth whitelist entry.
  • NewRelic update – Fix folder permission for proper NewRelic update.

Hey everyone! πŸ‘‹ We have released two new versions of EasyEngine – v4.0.16 and v4.0.17 which comes with some minor updates and fixes.

Features Added πŸ› οΈ

We have added a feature of cleaning up of old EasyEngine docker images once it has been updated. We have also added bcmath PHP module to all PHP 7 images.

Other than this we have added a refresh parameter in ee site enable. This will regenerate the docker-compose.yml of a site and force re-enable it. This feature will help in scenarios when the site’s docker-compose.yml has been manually updated or for some reason is changed. This feature will prevent the site from breaking and will take you back to the original EasyEngine site with the default EasyEngine docker-compose.yml πŸŽ‰

Notable Bugfixes πŸ›πŸš«
